![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Jane and Cassandra go to balls and meet with friends and family as they follow the "rules" and learn the harsh realities of the world - especially what it means to be a single woman in this time period, dependent on men. Throughout the novel, we see Jenny's quiet life in the country, and the social restrictions of the late eighteenth century that may seem unfamiliar to modern readers, all framed by the close bond with her older sister, Cassandra. Jenny is about seventeen, and already forming her idea of the world as she begins to write "Elinor and Marianne" (later known, of course, as "Sense and Sensibility"). The story begins on a surprising note, with the beheading of Jenny's cousin's husband (got all that?) in France and then transitions to Jenny's reaction to her glamourous cousin Eliza's widowhood. "Cassandra's Sister" focuses on young Jane Austen, or "Jenny," as a burgeoning writer and introduces a young, modern reader to the concerns of a woman growing up in Georgian England. (I'm done school! I have leisure-time for reading! I didn't know it still existed.) Please let me know what you think! I'm afraid I can feel my four years of English and History essay-writing coming into my style, so I hope it's not too long. To try and get my blogging practices up and running, I thought it would be good to write some reviews of books I've read. ![]()

Knowing that 14 and The Fold are somewhat connected did reduce the mystery ever so slightly, but Clines still managed to create enough suspense to keep me engaged. The Fold is the second book in the series, with a completely different story and new cast of characters in the same universe. It must be something related to this bizarre universe that Clines have created in his series of connected stand-alone novels which triggered such a coincidence. She even gives Alex shit about it, even after he explains his perfectly good reason. But Jessica doesn't seem to understand that and is basically just dead set on getting married no matter what. Alex knows that there's a chance that the angels will take him away from her forever and so he doesn't want to marry her because he doesn't want to leave her alone and unhappy without a husband. At the end of the last book, he sacrificed himself to save Jessica and instead of dying he came back as an angel, but there's no guarantee that he'll be with her forever. Now, the thing is, Alex has a pretty good reason for not wanting to marry her. ![]() Like I mentioned, her biggest source of angst is the fact that Alex won't propose to her, which makes her feel just a tad insecure (understatement of the century). ![]() It's good because "OMG we're together and he's so hawt eeeee" and bad because "OMG why won't he fucking marry me does he not love me whyyy? *sobangst*" The problem that I had with Jessica in this book was that she was kind of bitchy. Jessica and Alex's lame relationship is in some weird limbo state where it's good and bad at the same time. ![]() So, this book starts off some time after the last one left off. Just a fair warning: there will be spoilers in this review. Seriously, 85% of this book was angst from either Jessica, Alex, or Cole. Or as I like to call it, "For the Sake of Angst". ![]() ![]() ![]() Nora Porteous’s life takes her from Brisbane to Sydney to London and back again, living through both World Wars and the Great Depression, but this never feels like a work of historical fiction. I’d vaguely heard of Tirra Lirra because it pops up on those lists of Best Australian Novels and had won the Miles Franklin award. Published in 1978, Tirra Lirra is the earliest of the three, which each examine the life of a singular woman through the lens of personal recollection. Tirra Lirra by the River brought to mind for me Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively, and Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Strategic Silence: Gender and Economic Policy.
